Perpetual futures: regulatory milestones stopped on 2026-07-08, product launches did not

Cantica recorded seven perpetual futures developments between 7 June and 7 July 2026, all with regulatory language. Then, Binance announced further USD-margined perpetual contracts on traditional finance assets on 16 July and a SpaceX contract on 20 July, and Bitget listed quanto perpetual futures on Hong Kong dollar equities on 21 July.

What changed on 7 July is the kind of announcement. Earlier developments claim regulatory ground: the first Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) regulated perpetual futures for US clients, the first equity perpetuals platform, a comment request on perpetual contracts referencing crude oil. Later launches expand the asset list and name no regulator. Two dated events sit between them. CME Group asked a federal court on 18 June to vacate the CFTC order approving Kalshi's bitcoin perpetual contract, arguing perpetuals meet the Dodd-Frank definition of a swap.

The CFTC's comment window on perpetual contracts referencing physically delivered energy commodities closes on 27 July.
